5 Utah Musical Productions You Won't Want To Miss This Year

Every year, Utah is home to hundreds of great theater performances. It's a great state for theater-lovers to live in. But sometimes it can be hard to know what to spend your money on. Here are my top 5 productions you'll want to make sure and see in 2017.
5. Seussical - Utah Festival Opera and Musical Theater
I know, I know. You're first reaction to seeing Seussical on this list is, "Ugh! My nephew's high school did that show and it was awful!" And I get it. I don't think there's a high school in a 100 mile radius that hasn't done this show.
But this is a professional production, and Utah Festival's productions tend to be top notch. In fact, they get actors who have actually been on Broadway to come all the way to Logan! Check out my favorite song from the show.
If you want to see this show without having to tell your nephew how...special...his performance was, this is your chance. Don't miss it!
Show Dates: Jun 23 - Aug 7
4. A Fairly Potter Christmas Carol - Ziegfeld Theater
If you're like me, you've grown tired of the hundreds of thousands productions of A Christmas Carol put on Utah. Some theaters go so far as to put it on every year. I mean, we get it! MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERY ONE!!
That's why Fairly Potter is a must see this year. This show has been so popular at Ziegfeld that it's back for the third year in a row! If you love Harry Potter and Christmas magic, then you definitely need to see this show this year. Let's just hope it doesn't become an every-year-for-the-rest-of-eternity production (looking at you, Christmas Carol!).
Show Dates: Nov 25 - Dec 23
3. Kiss of the Spider Woman - Utah Repertory Theater
This 1993 show won the Tony for Best Musical, and yet since then has remained largely unproduced. In fact, as far as I know, Spider Woman hasn't been done in Utah in the last decade, potentially ever!
That, of course, is what makes Utah Rep the perfect company to bring this show to life. They have a knack for giving under-appreciated shows like Carrie and Side Show the love they deserve. As usual with Utah Rep, you can expect a rarely-seen musical treated with the love and devotion usually afforded only to Broadway favorites
Show Dates: Apr 21 - May 7
2. Matilda - Broadway National Tour
While this isn't a Utah production per se, it will be performed in Utah. So it counts right? Right? Plus, it's yet another excuse to visit the new and fabulous Eccles Theater in Salt Lake.
"But gee, Austin, other great National Tours like Lion King, Book of Mormon, and Mamma Mia are coming to Utah too. Why is this a must see?" Great question unembodied voice!
First of all, this is the first chance Utah audiences will have to see the West End musical. The story is also based off of one of the most beloved children's books ever! Plus, it features a whole host of incredibly talented and revolting children. Definitely something you're going to want to see!
Show Dates: Feb 21-26
1. Aida - Hale Centre Theater
As the first show to grace the Centre Stage at Hale's new Sandy location, I think we can expect a spectacle like no other from Aida. This 4 Tony winner written by the dynamic team of Elton John and Tim Rice already lends itself to Broadway magic, but my guess is that Hale Centre will be pulling out all of the stops on this one.
I really think this is going to be Utah's best show this year. The show isn't until the end of the year, but tickets are already selling out, so definitely pick yours up now!
Show Dates: Nov 17 - Jan 20
So what do you think which of these shows are you most excited to see? Did I miss any other "must-see" productions this year? Let me know in the comments below!
