Dear Evan Hansen

Last night at midnight, the much anticipated (by me, anyway) Dear Evan Hansen Original Broadway Cast Recording finally dropped. I've listened to the album approximately 12 times now, and I thought I'd share some of my thoughts about the music.

First of all, this is an incredibly talented cast. Ben Platt delivers every single note with conviction and precision. It's really quite amazing given how much of the singing is done by him. Rachel Bay Jones has some powerful emotional moments, both in "Good For You" and "So Big/So Small." And everyone else is just perfect.

The music! Oh the music! It's so beautiful and genuine. "Words Fail" is a great example of the amount of realness infused into this story. The situation Evan finds himself in is so authentic. The emotion in his voice is absolutely beautiful. And that reprise!? Let's just say it had this boy sobbing into his accounting homework. Listen and weep my friends.

It's really tough to pick a favorite song, because literally every track is magic (a la Ben Platt in Pitch Perfect ). but as of right now, I would say it's "For Forever." This song has some amazing orchestration, as well as some pretty powerful lyrics about what having a friend might be like for Evan. Check it out.

Every other song deserves a mention in this post, but I don't have time. So I'll just say that overall I'd give this album a 10/10. It's really that good. I've been listening/crying nonstop since it came out last night, and I'll probably keep listening for a while.

In regard to the show as a whole, I feel like after listening to the entire album, I have a much better idea of what the story is like. That being said, I think this show is a Tony winner for sure. The characters are complicated and relatable. The music is powerful. The performances are stunning. The orchestration is flawless. I guess we'll have to wait until June to see. In the meantime, make sure and check out the album on Spotify, iTunes, YouTube, or anywhere you can get music.
